Freshwater pearls are grown in lakes and rivers, mostly in China. They are produced by mussels, and one mussel can create many pearls at the same time. Freshwater pearls are usually solid nacre (the shiny pearl material) all the way through. They come in many shapes and soft colors like white, pink, peach, and lavender. They are generally more affordable.
Saltwater (sea) pearls are grown in oceans, commonly in Japan, Australia, Indonesia, and French Polynesia. They grow inside oysters, and usually only one pearl is produced per oyster. Most saltwater pearls have a bead nucleus inside with nacre layered around it. They are typically more round, have higher luster (shine), and are more expensive.
Pearls are delicate gemstones, so they need gentle care to keep their shine and smooth surface. Always put your pearls on last, after applying perfume, hairspray, lotion, or makeup. Chemicals can damage the nacre (the shiny outer layer). When removing jewelry, take pearls off first.
After wearing, wipe your pearls with a soft, slightly damp cloth to remove oils and sweat. If deeper cleaning is needed, use mild soap and lukewarm water, then wipe gently and let them air dry flat. Do not soak pearls and never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners.
Store pearls separately from other jewelry because harder gemstones like diamonds can scratch them. Keep them in a soft pouch or a lined jewelry box. Avoid airtight plastic bags — pearls need a bit of natural moisture in the air to prevent drying out.
